Top Blog Posts of the Week 6/2/2012

Posted by Joshua Claycamp on

This is a list of recent blog posts which I found interesting. That I found them interesting doesn’t mean I necessarily agree with or endorse all of the ideas presented in the posts, but that I found them to be intriguing and thought-provoking. They may benefit you as you prayerfully consider your area of shepherding and stewardship, which has been given to you in trust by the Lord. (They are listed in no particular order of interest.) Please post your comments to discuss  any article that strikes your interest. If you have recent blog posts to nominate, please send the link and your reasons for nominating that post to .

Earthquake Evidence May Reveal Exact Date of Jesus' Crucifixion

This is a fascinating read about extra-biblical evidence which supports the truth of Jesus Christ and the reality that He was crucified on a hill outside of Jerusalem. The problem with so many individuals who claim that the God of evangelical Christianity is a made-up God is that they can only make that claim in total ignorance of the overwhelming amount of evidence.

God Calls Us to Become What He Declares We Already Are

By Kenneth Keathley

Those who follow God must follow Him into what He desires for their life. He has died to make us something, but what it is that He is making us is not a complete mystery. Dr. Kenneth Keathley does a great job elaborating upon the fact that we need to become what God has died to make us.

Why we Lie

This is a great article about the reasons behind why all people lie. And the truth is that all people lie. While you may be able to guess at the motivations behind why people lie as a Christian, this secular researcher gets to the bottom of things without a Christian perspective:

“Except for a few outliers at the top and bottom, the behavior of almost everyone is driven by two opposing motivations. On the one hand, we want to benefit from cheating and get as much money and glory as possible; on the other hand, we want to view ourselves as honest, honorable people.”

Citizenship Confusion: Alienation and the Christian Ethic of Shopping at Threadless, Etsy, and Trades of Hope

So, have you ever thought about the detrimental effects that ordering stuff off the internet might have on you as a consumer? How about the effects of faceless purchasing on the producer who makes the product you buy? This is an interesting read on the impact that distance shopping might have on our souls.

5 Things Mentors Should Model

Men, there are certain things that you should be modeling for your kids to see. In a world run amok with people seeking “mentors” and “coaches,” we all know that Dad is the original mentor by God’s design. Fathers, give this article a read and seek to model for your children godly behavior!

Evangelize, Don’t Indoctrinate

Although I wrote on this topic briefly earlier in the week, this is still a helpful reminder and worth your time reading. Moms, are we indoctrinating our kids or are we genuinely shepherding them to faith in Jesus Christ?

Three Cheers for "Moralistic" Applications of the OT

Douglas Wilson does a great job poking fun at the odd obsession that many in modern evangelicalism have, insisting on everything as being “gospel-this” and “gospel-that.” I find Wilson’s comments on the strange phenomenon to be quite helpful. We are, in point of fact, losing our emphasis on the Gospel the more we emphasize it.

Are your Gospel-centered Catch Phrases Biblical

I was once told that one of my sermons, though completely Biblical, was simply not gospelled-up enough.  The exact phrase was, “This sermon didn’t have enough Gospel in it!” Everyone was in complete agreement that the sermon was Biblical, rested upon Biblical terminology, and was faithful to the meaning of the text in its exposition and application. But... it just didn’t have enough of the Gospel. It was at this point in time that I began to sense that the Gospel-Centered movement was becoming something more than a helpful counter-corrective.

Eric McKiddie does a great job of bringing us back to the Bible. Let us never forget that God is the Gospel. Therefore, whatever He says and however He says it is an extension of the Gospel. Let us heed the Word of God!

“But I wonder if the pendulum has swung to another assumption: that if something is “gospel-centered” then it is necessarily right and biblical. This begs the question, are our gospel-centered catch phrases biblical? We need to make sure that our standard is the Bible, not gospel centrality.”
