Making Money: Sometimes the Most Honest Dollar is the one You Walk away from.

Posted by Joshua Claycamp on

Sometimes I hear adults tell young people, “Make all the money you can, just so you make it honestly.” In fact, this was the advice that I grew up hearing all the time. That’s not good advice. In fact, that's absolutely horrible advice. If you make all the money you can, you are going to be making money when you should be doing something else instead. Think about it:

If you make all the money you can, you are going to be spending it on things you don't need.

If you make all the money you can, you are going to be spending it on the up-keep of all the stuff you bought that you don't need.

If you make all the money you can, you will not be giving it away to people who need it more than you.

If you make all the money you can, you are going to be making money when you should be helping your neighbor.

If you make all the money you can, you are going to be making money when you should be doing yard work and gardening.

If you make all the money you can, you are going to be making money when you should be playing with your children.

If you make all the money you can, you are going to be making money when you should be taking your spouse out on a date.

If you make all the money you can, you are going to be making money when you should be honoring your Father and your Mother.

If you make all the money you can, you are going to be making money when you should be sleeping.

If you make all the money you can, you are going to be making money when you should be going to Church.

If you make all the money you can, you are going to be making money in order to trust in money, and this blasphemes the Name of God.

If you make all the money that you can, you are going to be making money when you ought to be quiet and alone with God.

If you make all the money you can, you simply cannot worship God.

You may have noticed that I'm losely following the Ten Commandments as I consider the modern day great commandment, "Thou shalt make all the money you can." The idea of making money just competes too much for our heart's affection. It makes us greedy. I’m not against making money. I’m trying to tell you that you need to stop and prioritize your life the way that God wants you to prioritize your life. There's way more to life than making money, and I know of quite a few folks who will testify that they made decisions early in their life for the sake of making money which robbed them entirely of some of the finer moments of happiness that they could have had later in life. You simply cannot make career decisions based on both money and the happiness that God can provide at the same time. You will follow one or the other, but never both.

So do not MAKE ALL THE MONEY YOU CAN! There's no such thing as a money-driven person who is able to enjoy all the blessings that God wants to give.
